What Fix My Speaker does

Fix My Speaker is a free browser tool that plays low-frequency tones and vibration patterns through your phone’s speaker. The speaker cone moves back and forth with the sound, and that movement pushes trapped water droplets and loose dust out through the speaker grille. It runs in any modern browser, so there is nothing to install.

It works best right after the phone gets wet: rain, a splash at the pool, a drink spilled on the table, or a quick rinse under the tap. If the sound is muffled, quieter than usual or crackles, there is a good chance water is sitting behind the grille.

How to use it

1. Check the phone first. Remove the case, wipe the outside dry and make sure the phone turns on normally. If it got fully submerged in salt water or a sugary drink, read the section on when the tool is not enough before you start.
2. Run the sound treatment. Turn the volume to maximum, hold the phone with the speaker facing down and press the play button above. Automatic mode runs three stages: a water eject tone, a tilt-and-eject stage and a vibration drying stage. You will often see small droplets appear on the grille during the first stage.
3. Verify the result. Play a song or a video and compare the sound with how the speaker normally sounds. If it is still muffled, run the stages again, or use manual mode to repeat only the stage that helped most.

Two or three rounds are usually enough. Let the phone rest for a few minutes between rounds so the speaker does not get hot.

Which devices it works on

The tool works on any device that can play sound in a browser: iPhone, Android phones, tablets and laptops. On a phone, it mainly clears the main loudspeaker, which is the one most likely to trap water.

Why sound works better than waiting or rice

Water in a speaker sits in a very small space behind a mesh. Surface tension holds the droplets there, so they evaporate slowly and keep dampening the sound in the meantime. Putting the phone in rice does not draw water out of the speaker; it only keeps the phone still while it dries on its own.

A speaker, on the other hand, is built to move air. When it plays a strong low tone, the cone pushes the droplets toward the grille with every movement. That is the same idea behind the water lock feature some smartwatches use after swimming.

When the tool is not enough

A sound tool can clear water from the speaker. It cannot repair a damaged phone. Stop using the tool and get the phone checked if any of these apply:

• The phone was fully under water for a long time, or in salt water, chlorinated water or a sugary drink. Residue can corrode contacts even after the water is gone.
• The screen flickers, the phone restarts on its own or it gets warm while charging.
• The speaker makes no sound at all, even after a few rounds and a day of drying.
• The liquid contact indicator in the SIM tray has changed colour.

Do not charge a phone that may have water in the charging port until it is completely dry. Do not use a hair dryer on high heat or push objects into the speaker grille.

Is it safe for the speaker?

Yes, when it is used as intended. The tones are within the range a phone speaker is designed to play, and each stage is short. The main thing to avoid is running it on repeat for a long time at maximum volume. A few rounds with short breaks is all a wet speaker needs.
